Edward Snowden: Traitor or Patriot Article

http://eaglerising.com/1174/edward-snowden-patriot-or-traitor/ (Link to article)

This article summarizes if Eric Snowden is an actual traitor to this country. If people believe in the NSA, then people should believe that he is most certainly a traitor. This article is very interesting that explains about Eric Snowden and the Obama Administration as well.

My opinion of gender roles

Since we did a Prezi about gender roles in class, I thought I give my own opinion about gender roles in advertisements. When I saw the video with the advertisements, there were some awkward moments in the pictures. Most of the awkward moments came from the vulnerable positions from the females. I remember one picture of three guys and one girl with the guy holding her on the ground in a firm position. This resembles that the males have power and it leaves the ladies vulnerable. Most of these pictures I never saw before, and to see these pictures for the first time, it was kind of surprising.

In the video, they described some of the pictures as uncomfortable to some extent. I disagree with this statement because some of the pictures look very natural and beautiful. They describe the positions with detail and they mostly talk about the females. They talked about the touching, coloring, clothing, etc. Most of the pictures show great detail, as they try to sell the product.

The last thing I found interesting is that most of the models in the pictures are fake. They take ordinary people to take the pictures and as soon as they are done with the pictures, they edit them with photo shop to make the models perfect. I really didn’t realize this until now. Now when I look at current advertisements, I’m going to look at it twice and see if it looks real or not. Overall, the advertisements seem natural to me; however a few percent of them are bizarre.

Digital Story Annotated Bibliography

1.    Foster, Cormac. "Do Violent Video Games Really Cause Violent Behavior?" ReadWrite. N.p., 31 Dec. 2012. Web. 08 Nov. 2013.

A.                  The main point of this article was to show if this myth was actually true. They did experiments on certain types of video games, to see if it actually causes aggressiveness. The main experiment they tested was three video games that were called The Legend Of Zelda, Grand Theft Auto, and Missile Command. In the last section of the article, they said there is not enough evidence to make a conclusion if video games really cause violent behavior. I agree with this statement because people could react in different ways while playing violent video games. I chose this article because I’m going to compare different games that have violence and see how they change people’s attitude.

2.    DeNoon, Daniel J. "Do Video Games Really Spark Bad Behavior?" Fox News. FOX News Network, 19 Aug.           2005. Web. 08 Nov. 2013.

B.                  This article is a little similar to the article written by Cormac Foster. This article tells us readers that they tested the video game called Asheron’s Call 2 to see if causes a change in behavior as well.  As a result, it did show aggressiveness after a short-play. This proved to show that some video games do cause a change in behavior. They lastly tell us that most of the aggressiveness comes from the younger age group of kids such as 12 years old or younger. I chose this article because it caught my interest to see why violent video games cause more aggressiveness in young children.

3.    Keim, Brandon. "What Science Knows About Video Games and Violence." PBS. PBS, 28 Feb. 2013.      Web. 16 Nov. 2013.

C.                   This article summarizes the science behind the violence of video games. The more violent they are the more emotional changes will arise within children. This article is very interesting because it talks mostly about the first person shooter games. It says that it causes the most aggression within kids because of the gore and gameplay. I chose this article because I play first-person shooters and I can talk my experiences playing them.

4.    McGraw, Phil. "Dr. Phil.com - Advice - Children and Violent Video Games." Dr. Phil.com-Advice-      Children and Violent Video Games. N.p., n.d. Web. 16 Nov. 2013.

D.                  This article written by Dr. Phil tells parents how they can prevent their children from getting aggressive when playing video games. They can limit their time so they don’t get very involved or not let them play violent video games in general. I chose this article because I’m going to explain how aggressiveness can be prevented within in children, so they can grow up to become better adults.

Digital Story Part 1

People in their free time usually do activities such as; watching television, hanging out friends, doing homework, or playing video games. They all sound great activities to do in a short period of time; however, 1 out of the 4 mentioned people abuse it very much. That activity is playing video games for a long period of time. For people abusing this activity, they have to be constantly playing for many hours a day. Psychologically, it can change their behavior.
My main topic is about how video games can change people’s behavior. The way it can change a person’s behavior is the violence or online communication through the internet in online play. This ties into digital media because video games developed dramatically over the years with technology. The technology created greater graphics, and more realistic gameplay to the get the gamer more interested. Social justice ties into this because this is a social issue that people do not realize. Children at a young age should not be playing a rated M (Mature) game. Every game is required by law to have a rating on their game. The ratings go in order as follows; E for everyone, T for teen, M for mature, and A for adult. As the ratings increase, the more intense the violence gets. As an example, the game Mario Kart is rated E for everyone and Call of Duty is rated M. These games are significantly different, with the way they are played and different the violence. Mario Kart has no violence in it because the game is made for younger kids. Call of Duty is mostly made for adults because they are more mature to handle the situations with the violence in the game.
The way I want to tell my story is how much the violent video games cause the most change in children’s behavior. They do not realize how violent they are, and sometimes this could be an issue because psychologically they might think it is alright to do similar things involved in the game. I’m going to do a study how much people get more aggressive emotionally after they are done playing the game, and do another study on younger kids playing happy non-violent games and how they react to that.
The two sources that I’m using are very interesting because there are studies that prove that they do change behavior. These studies are usually studied by students and PhD doctors. More studies should be made in the future because video games will continue to evolve and get more violent. Game developers do this because most of the popular games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield bring great investments to make more games in the future. The sources (located below) are two out of the four I’m going to use for the annotated bibliography. The other sources I’m going to search on is that if violent video games actually change their behavior is true.

Is the internet a villian?

I found this very interesting because it seems that the internet can be like a villain to our society. How is this even possible? Well, there has been dramatic increase in identity theft, which involves hackers. Identity theft is pretty self-explanatory, but it basically means when someone uses another person’s identity to take advantage of their items such as; credit cards, debit cards, etc. This involves the internet because many of the cases are caused over the internet. Someone can easily hack a person’s personal information and the victim would never know who the person is.

Hackers have developed because of the internet. An example of a conflict was when Sony got hacked about a couple years ago. Most of the problem was on the PSN (PlayStation Network). This brought anger in a lot of people because many of them had credit card numbers on it, so they can purchase items from the PSN store. The PSN network was down for at least 1 month and Sony took a heavy loss in sales. The hacker group that did all of this, was called Anonymous. They called themselves Anonymous because they wanted nobody to know who they were.

As mentioned, the internet is similar to a villain because it can’t be trusted at all. I never put personal information on the internet because I know it’s not secure as everyone thinks. There are many great things for the internet, as far as getting medical information or even just keeping in contact with loved ones. Overall, I think people should think twice before posting their personal information because they are putting themselves in vulnerable position.

Technology Replacing Books

Schools have been using books for centuries. Now, since our new generation is all around technology. Everything is going to be on electronics. This means books would be on phones, iPad’s, or Kindles. This could be a huge accomplishment because regular text books cost a lot of money for schools to get. Especially in college, since every student has to get their own text books. On average students pay at most $500 for the total of the books.

This article I read written by Pam Brombal has a lot of interesting information that says a lot about what people’s opinions in schools such as: teachers, principals, or even students. Gladstone school’s principal Matt Delany says that, "I think that over the next five to ten years we will see a change in the way that schools operate in terms of using technology over books, especially as we see new teachers come out of university who are used to using iPads and new technologies," This ties into what I said before about most of the books would be on the different types of electronics.

Technology keeps evolving every year, with new ideas and mind blowing inventions that no one thinks could be possible. If this is successful in the future about replacing books, then we could save the environment. I agree that technology should replace books because it is much easier for students to handle. Students can just purchase an app to get the books right away, instead of waiting a week or so to get them. I found this very interesting, and if you want to learn more about it here is the article I read down below.

Discussion Questions For 10/28/13

1. As Turkle mentions, if we don't adapt to the virtual and real worlds as it goes through changes, we will be not as both healthy mentally and physically. Can the internet experiences actually help us remain flexible, and in turn, healthy?

2. Turkle says that "Thinking about people as information carries the serious risk of impoverishing our sense of the human." How has the virtual world really affect the way we look at other people?

3. Since Turkle does not blame online persona, however the way she explains it is kind of interesting. She does not explain once a person adapts to the virtual world, they are opening themselves into having more than just one-identity notion. Why has the internet and online persona been the cause of more cases of MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder)?

The Bad Affects of Video Games

Video games have grown graciously over the years. There has been a debate whether they actually affect children’s behavior. Studies shown that young kids playing violent video change moods dramatically, and become a little more aggressive. This usually occurs mostly of the violent games because they are much more intense than the other ones. Most of the games now also have online; where kids can communicate to people they do not know.

Some of bad habits that children can start to form are, not focusing on their studies in school, constantly playing games for many hours, and changing their behavior to their peers or family. These bad habits could affect them in the future because it could become an addiction, which is much more serious. Having an addiction could be hard to get rid of because psychologically, their minds are constantly live in a fantasy world. Health is another issue that can affect children. If kids are constantly playing video games and not exercising, they could increase in their weight rapidly. They should be exercising at least 60 min a day to keep their bodies in shape.

This issue could be fixed in a variety of ways. There is a law where people have to be at least 17 years old in order to buy a rated M (Mature) game. The other rated games are rated E for everyone, T for teen, and A for Adult. This law does work to an extent; however the parents buy the game for the child and let them play. Some kids are playing rated M games at 13 years or sometimes even younger. Parents need to be stricter to their children, so they can turn out to be better kids when they are older. But unfortunately, video games will continue to be violent and more young children are playing them more rapidly.

Is social media bad for our society?

Social media has evolved over the course of many years. Some people debate whether it’s good or bad for our society. This website called www.debate.org is a community based discussion group that talks about social issues, which is very interesting to see what other people have to say about our society. 78% of people say that social media is bad and the other 22% say it’s a great thing to have in our society. I have to agree on the 78% of people because I believe social media changes people’s behaviors. Social media takes away from face-to-face conversation and generations before never had this type of media on the internet. However, I believe social media is a good thing to have for jobs. If you are starting a new business, social media is a great way to get your business noticed. Overall, the community agrees that social media causes problems that needs to be addressed.

Some of the issues include false internet stories, people loosing communication skills, and it is medicine for emotional security. Having false internet can start rumors about individuals that are not necessarily true. People loosing communication skills ties into having less confidence, this means people would have a hard time talking socially to others. Is medicine a cure for emotional security? No, however some people use it as an escape to life. The internet is one place anyone could feel good about them and have that power by just typing a message. I hope this issue brought attention to you and here is the link to where you can give your own opinion.

Social Action Project Part 2 (individual)

In my opinion I believe the best project source to use to express electronic waste is guerrilla art. The reason why I that guerilla art is the best source to use is because it is a way to express your own feelings about the world. You can use guerilla art to express your ideas and creativity about electronic waste. The drawings could include how electronic waste is being an issue towards different countries and how it can prevented in the future. There are many great sources to use but, I believe guerilla art is the best way to use so more people can recognize it. The way the issued was expressed in the past was by videos or news. Now that technology and the internet have evolved over the years from generation to generation. It can be spread everywhere over the year and this is a fantastic thing. As more people see that this is a major social issue that involves the environment and lives of people, they can spread the word to their peers. Hopefully in the future, the social issue will gradually decline because people do not deserve living in these conditions. Guerilla art can be expressed in your own way, no matter if it’s a story line or just one simple picture. No matter how you express, it still tell us about the social issue. Technology will just continue to evolve in the future and electronic waste can still be an issue, if we don’t put a stop to this.

Social Action Project Introduction Part 1 (individual)

There is a topic that has been an issue for quite some time. This social is issue is electronic waste. Electronic waste means, when countries ship their wasted technology that is discarded to other countries. They usually ship it to the poor countries, like in Africa. There are workers that have to burn the technology in order to get rid of it. This is very dangerous because there are toxic fumes that can be floating in the air, which could cause health hazards. People that live in parts of Africa waste live in horrible conditions, and electronic waste is not helping the cause. People have to constantly work to get rid of it. They have no protection when they work, and they should be wearing special equipment.

The interesting part is that some of the technology still actually works. Some of the hard drives in computers still have information on them. Some of the documents can show people’s personal information, as in credit card numbers. This could increase identity theft, and the victim could never know how they accessed their information. There have been actually some cases where government documents have been found, and this is a sign of careless with our nation. They need take this more seriously and delete the information. This is a huge disappointment to our country because we are shipping this waste and causing harm to the other poor countries. This is a very serious social issue that needs to be fixed quickly.

E-Waste Video Questions

1. How badly do you think the environment is affected by electronic waste?

Answer: In my opinion, the environment is severely affected by this. As you see in the video, toxic fumes were everywhere in the air around Ghana. When they burn cords, computers, or any other parts of technology, it is very dangerous and unhealthy. Towards the end of the video, it showed a guy working with the acid bath and he said "Some of the fumes make me really sick and it's ruining my life." This is a serious issue that could be fixed by people not throwing away technology carelessly.

2. What would you do if someone had access to your personal information?

Answer: Well that's usually what happens when people throw away a computer that is still working. Isn't that very scary? One of the guys tested a couple of hard drives to see if they actually still worked and amazingly, they worked perfectly fine. Some of them saw credit card numbers, and personal documents. People don't realize if they throw a decent computer with the hard drive still in it, there is still information on it, which could increase identity theft.

3. How do you feel that our nation's safety could be greatly affected?

Answer: This is also ties into with in personal information because they have accessed federal documents in the hard drives. That definitely impacts our safety because there was one document that was a 22 million dollar contract and it was for the Defensive Intelligence Agency (DIA). If they have access to this kind of information, that means they can access plans about the Federal Government. This needs to be stopped immediately!

Cyber Bullying

Cyber Bullying has been a major issue in the past years because of social media. Social media has been gradually increasing and it will continue in the future. Cyber bullying is verbally abusing somebody over the internet and it usually occurs with teenagers. In some ways cyber bullying can be even worse because it is on the internet where everybody can see it. I’m afraid it will be gradually become a problem because digital media is very huge and popular right now. The sky is the limit to where social media can go. The three most popular types of social media include, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The most common website that could cause problems is Twitter because it is very similar to texting and once you post a message to a person your following, others can see it right away. The internet can be very dangerous and some people are brutally mean, which could lead to consequences.

This ties into social justice because no one should be treated like dirt over the internet. Bullying is against the law, no matter if it’s verbally or physically. Unfortunately, some teens do commit suicide because of this, and it’s very sad. An article that I read had some interesting statistics about cyber bullying. Here are the top three that I thought were the most interesting; "Overweight and obese kids are 63% more likely to be bullied, 39% of social network users experience cyber bullying, and 56% report that cyber bullying has real-world consequences." The person who wrote the articles is Jared Skye and he made some great points about it. Luckily, cyber bullying has been going down and hopefully it stays that way because people are getting more involved with social media. All of us can make a difference, by making someone feel better about themselves.

Social Justice and Digital Media of Advertising

In the past, before technology was a huge part of our society, advertising was mostly on paper. Now in a whole new generation, mostly everything from advertising is on billboards, the internet, and television. Companies like to make a unique commercial to get people buy their product. This ties into digital media because if you go on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or any other internet website, it’s everywhere. On YouTube, most videos that are popular have at least a 30sec ad in the video. Advertising ties in with Social Justice because some advertising try to influence people they can feel happier if they buy the product. They also try to make the commercials catchy, so you can remember them. If you repeat a song or phrase from it, people might recognize it and could get the word around with people asking, “Why is everyone saying this on that commercial?”
In the future, mostly everything that involves advertising is going to be on digital media. Very solemn now you’re going to see advertising in the newspaper because mostly everybody doesn’t pay attention to that. When people watch T.V, they mostly have to watch the commercials because 95% of television goes to commercials. A regular television show, says it might last a half hour but, usually the actual show is only close to 20min. There are some great motivation commercials that ties into social justice because social justice can make everyone equal and people can do anything they want to. They just need to have the mindset to be successful on doing it and keep trying if mistakes happen. When I saw this, I thought this was interesting because it tied in with digital media and social justice, that’s why I posted this for my blog.

50th year anniversary about "I have a dream"

Amazingly, it has been 50 years since the last time Martin Luther King Jr. said the famous speech “I have a dream.” This short article that I have read, says that did we really listened to his speech today and how our world has changed over the years. During that time period, when Martin Luther King said that speech, there was a lot of emotion, sadness about our nation and to bring everyone together as one. Also the speech said, there should not be any racism, hatred, and everyone respecting each other. When he gave that speech, it brought attention to many people and everyone saw something different in our nation. African Americans were treated unfairly, poorly and no one should be treated like that. Their regular human beings just like us and people should never treat them any differently because of their skin color.

In my opinion, I believe that his speech has no effect on our society today as it did before. People are still biased and racist today, however I think it wasn’t as bad as it was before. Racism means that people hate one certain race or culture for their own certain reason and it’s absolutely mean. Everyone should be treated equal and it ties into social justice because social justice should be brought up more around our world. It will bring people’s attention and it could get spread around, which would be fantastic. We should never forget Martin Luther King for his passion to bring our nation together. Martin Luther King Day is a great holiday to remember him as a great leader and speaker. As for digital media, it can get around the world to remember Martin Luther King. Digital media can get very social and if people see that is the 50th anniversary of "I have a dream speech," it can make people tell everyone out there.

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Questions

1. Would you live in Omelas? Why or why not?

Answer: I would not want to live at Omelas because I believe it would be an uncomfortable place to stay at. Even thou a lot of people are happy and enjoying the experience, I think a lot of trouble would happen in that area.

2. If you saw the child, what would you do to help him?

Answer: I would give him food, water, clothing, and also to find him a good place for him stay to get help. The child has some problems because he has not seen the outside world and needs someone to help him guide through the situation.

3. How much different is Omelas living style than ours today?

Answer: In my personal opinion, I believe there is a little difference on the styles. This includes the way people act, how they treat each other, how technology is involved, and how do they manage themselves to have a successful life.

Social Justice and technology

Social justice is a major part in our country today. Social justice is in our society, all around the world and takes place in different social classes. Social justice is a way to bring our society together and make peace in our world because there is so much racism and hatred out there. With social justice, it can bring people together and treat everyone fairly. That’s the way it should be because it can build relationships. Meeting new people is a great way to find similar interests and ideas that people have. Our world has more good people than bad and as we bring our societies together, there will be less crime and more love. Our society has evolved over the course of years. As a society we can get together with people around the world and announce certain activities to bring our society as one and have everybody contribute. There can be banners on the streets, restaurants, and on the roads as well. There will be more peace in our world in the future.

There was less crime in the past centuries because technology might have been involved. Technology overtime has improved more rapidly than anything else in our world. In the past people barely had any technology like cell phones, T.V’s, and computers. The internet is the biggest technology invention that was ever created and it has helped us with our health, which is the most important. Technology will continue to evolve over the years and this will create more fantastic activities for social justice.
